Treatment for Low Testosterone and the Prostate

While a connection between testosterone replacement therapy and prostate cancer has been feared for many years, a new study has revealed that not only does no such connection exist, but testosterone replacement therapy was linked to an actual decrease in mortality rates. The belief regarding the connection originated in the 1940s as a result of studies performed by University of Chicago urologist Charles Huggins, and indeed, Dr. Huggins won the Nobel Prize for his research and discoveries regarding the prostate.

The link between prostate cancer and testosterone replacement therapy was tenuous, however, but remained generally unquestioned until recently. It wasn’t until researchers at the David Geffen School of Medicine at the University of California Los Angeles began looking into the statistics that the truth became clear.

Researchers identified nearly 150,000 cases of men who had been diagnosed with prostate cancer, and their observations clearly demonstrated that those men who received testosterone replacement therapy after their diagnosis experienced a smaller mortality rate than those who did not. While the exact reason for the decreased mortality rate isn’t immediately clear, it is evident that the testosterone therapy didn’t negatively affect the prostate.
