Facts and Findings about Low Testosterone among San Diego’s Aging Men

In a nutshell, San Diego’s population of 1.3 million (not to mention the population of any city around the world) would not have been possible without the help of testosterone. This steroid hormone is responsible for the development of the male reproductive organ and all the characteristics that are associated with it, including the changes that men undergo during puberty. As men age however, testosterone levels tend to go down, and as it happens, the affected man’s drive will begin to decline.

About Low Testosterone

Low testosterone among San Diego men isn’t uncommon; in fact the decline might start at the age of 30. Here’s what writer Matt McMillen has to say, as mentioned in an article in WebMD:

“After age 30, most men begin to experience a gradual decline in testosterone. A decrease in sex drive sometimes accompanies the drop in testosterone, leading many men to mistakenly believe that their loss of interest in sex is simply due to getting older.”

Decreased Drive

As already established, low sex drive is one of the major red flags of a waning testosterone level. Since many dismiss it merely as a sign of aging or a condition that tags along with erectile dysfunction, the condition is often left to develop other symptoms like depression, hot flashes, fatigue and even sleep apnea, in many cases.

Erection and Semen

Many people falsely associate having low testosterone levels with erectile dysfunction, because both make it difficult for the sufferer to achieve and maintain erection. This happens because the hormone is responsible for stimulating brain receptors to produce nitric oxide. Low semen volume (and thus decreased motility) is also another indication of low T.

Getting Tested

Even if you exhibit some of the aforementioned symptoms though, experts caution against taking actions or treatments without consulting with your doctor first. This is because these signs might also be caused by thyroid conditions or complications from medication you take. Your best bet would be to get a blood test. According to Harvard Medical School, men over 65 years should have testosterone levels between 300 to 450 ng/dL.

Be sure to visit reliable practices like Total T Clinic and have a checkup done before you sign up for any San Diego low testosterone treatment, even if it’s just for a prescription skin cream or something similar. While it’s always best to be on the lookout for signs, don’t take every red flag you find as an immediate cause for panic.
